Common mistakes when doing a road test

Best Practices

Below you will find a list of maneuvers along with the common mistakes associated with the maneuvers. Depending on the scenario, these mistakes can either result in a general mistake(minor point taken) or a critical mistake (automatic failure).

(Maneuver) Left turns at green lights:

• Leaning vehicle to the left (vehicle/wheels should be kept straight),

• not established far enough into the intersection (should be just before the midpoint of the intersection)

• established too far into the intersection.

• not established at all.

• Not yielding to oncoming traffic going straight or turning right.

• Not yielding to pedestrians.

• Tries to establish with the vehicle infront. (only 1 vehicle should enter when established. Remain behind the stop line until vehicle has cleared intersection)

(Maneuver) Right turns (no stop signs/no lights):

• Turning from the incorrect lane,

• Not pulling close enough to the curb,

• Striking/Jumping the curb when turning.

• Not yielding to pedestrians on crosswalk

• Not entering your closest lane after you make the turn.

• Entering the parking lane with less than 30 meters of space

• Not entering the parking lane when there is 30 meters or more space available

(Maneuver) 3-way/4-way stop:

• Hesitate whenever you have the right of way to go,

• Go whenever you don't have the right of way.

• Not coming to a complete stop(count 3 seconds).

• Not going in the order of which you stopped

• Giving away your right of way,

• Not yielding to pedestrians,

• Stopping at the incorrect point or beyond stopping point.

(Maneuver) 1- way/2- way stop signs:

• Going whenever it's not safe,

• Not yielding to traffic without a stop sign,

• Not yielding to pedestrians,

• Not coming to complete stop(count 3 seconds when stopped),

• Stopping at the incorrect point or beyond stopping point.

(Maneuver) Changing lanes:

• Not shoulder checking,

• Not signaling,

• Not checking mirrors,

• Crossing the solid line that separate lanes

• Changing lanes within an intersection

• Changing lanes when it's not safe

Speed management:

• Exceeding the speed limit

• Going too slow unnecessarily

• Driving at an inappropriate speed according to the condition of the road

Lane position:

• Straddling the line,

• Improper vehicle position

Vehicle spacing:

• Traveling too closely behind vehicle,

• Stopping too closely behind vehicle,

(Maneuver) Left median turn:

• Not keeping the vehicle to the left as much as possible,

• Front end of the vehicle petrude/ blocking lane,

• Crossing left side of the boulevard when it's not safe,

• Not yielding to traffic coming from the right side of the boulevard

Yield signs:

• Approaching with an inappropriate speed,

• Not yielding to pedestrians/ traffic by completely stopping,

• Stopping unnecessarily (no pedestrians/ traffic)

(Maneuver) Left turns from a stop sign:

• Not coming to complete stop,

• Stopping at incorrect point or beyond stopping point,

• Not checking or yielding for pedestrians,

• Not checking / yielding for traffic without stop sign

• Leaving the stop when it's not safe.

• Not yielding to straight through traffic.

(Maneuver) Left turn (no stop sign/ no lights):

• Not yielding to oncoming traffic going straight or turning right

• Coming to an unnecessary stop(no traffic or pedestrians)

• Turning when it's not safe(inappropriate speed)

• Turning and crossing line into opposite lane

• Turning too wide and too far from center line

(Maneuver) Right turns from a stop sign:

• Not coming to complete stop,
